Police and other emergency services are responding to reports of an active shooting near Virginia Tech in downtown Blacksburg, local officials and witnesses say. The campus of Virginia Tech has been put on lockdown.
The incident began just before midnight on Friday when officers were called for an active shooter in the area of West Roanoke Street and Draper Road in Blacksburg, not far from the campus of Virginia Tech.
According to initial reports, at least several people were shot and taken to hospital, but specific details were not immediately available. There’s no official word on the status of the suspect or suspects.
In an emergency message, Virginia Tech said: “Person with a gun reported near West Roanoke St./Draper Rd. Stay Inside. Secure doors. Emergency personnel responding. Call 911 for help.”
In an update at 12:21 a.m., the university said: “Continue to secure in place. Emergency personnel on scene.”
