Applications are now being accepted for the 2022 Jeremiah’s Sports Foundation scholarship.
Judy Duncan, the president of the foundation and Jeremiah Duncan’s mother, said the foundation was started in February 2020 soon after Jeremiah passed away.
“(It) was founded by his family in memory of him,” she said. “It’s something that we all wanted to do. Jeremiah was very caring and supportive of so many people. He was a college student at USC Aiken, hoping to do a walk-on and play baseball because he was an athlete at Silver Bluff High School. He was passionate about sports. Due to the loss of him we wanted to start this foundation in memory of him in order to help other students.”
On Feb. 4, 2020, Jeremiah, 20, was found murdered in his vehicle. He was a sophomore at USCA where he was studying communication, Duncan said. She added that he was looking forward to playing baseball.
The foundation was able to give six scholarships in the fall of 2021 ranging from $500 to $2,000, Duncan said. There are several requirements for students to be eligible to receive a scholarship.
“The students must be a high school senior only, possession a minimum of a 2.6 GPA, they must plan to enroll full time at four year college, university or vocational technical school,” Duncan said. “They must also reside in the CSRA.”
To apply, seniors can go to the foundation’s website, www.jeremiahssportsfoundation.org, click on scholarship where they can download the form and then e-mail it to the foundation with all the other required materials. The deadline to apply is May 1. The 2022 scholarships will be presented in the fall.
Duncan added that there will be at least one scholarship for an eligible Silver Bluff High School student.
The foundation raises funds through community fundraisers, Duncan said. Anyone interested in making a donation to the foundation can visit the website for more information.
